Although it is widely associated with France, the Poodle is thought to have originated in medieval Germany as a duck-hunting dog, Its name comes from the German word pudelin, which means ' to splash". The Poodle's distinctive clip was developed to help them stay warm and maneuverable in the water.
More then 4 centuries ago, the Standard Poodle descended from the Barbet and the Hungarian Water Hound with the purpose of retrieving water foul on the hunt.

While Poodles are generally healthy long lived dogs, they are prone to certain conditions. One of the most common ailments are ear infections. Additionally, Poodles may also be susceptible to food allergies. As with all breeds, keeping them at a good body condition score is important.

Health Concerns

Poodle hair requires a fair amount of grooming if not kept really short. Professional grooming will be needed every 4 to 6 weeks with brushing 3 to 4 days a week if the coat is to be kept longer. If kept short, brushing once a week is acceptable. Long lying ears will need particular attention with weekly cleaning.Poodle hair is non shedding and considered scent free.

Poodles are highly intelligent dogs and have a quick learning ability. This makes them great candidates for obedience training and various dog sports. With consistent and positive reinforcement, they can  pick up commands and excel in different activities.
